Liberty wanted Kearney. Liberty will get Kearney.
When I showed up at a recent preseason practice with the Blue Jays softball team, the girls had one thing on their mind heading into the high school softball season. You can check out out the season preview story (and the girls' comments) right here.
It's safe to say, the Jays are out for some revenge against Kearney, the team that has ended their year in each of the past two seasons. Liberty didn't have to wait long.
Liberty and Kearney will meet at 3:45 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, in the semifinals of the championship bracket of the Greater Kansas City Suburban Softball Invitational at Adair Park in Independence. These two teams squared off of district championship games the past two years.
Kearney, which finished third in the Class 4 state tournament a year ago, escaped the first round of bracket play yesterday, scoring a run in the first inning and holding on for a 1-0 win against Lee's Summit North in a rematch of last year's state quarterfinal game. Liberty advanced by pounding Fort Osage 15-1.
Lee's Summit and Blue Springs South will meet in the other semifinal. The tournament championship and third-place games are set for 5:30 p.m. Friday - immediately following the semifinal games.
