Liberty Tribune is one of five newspapers published by Sun News in the greater Kansas City area. It is one of the oldest continuously published newspapers west of the Mississippi River, providing local news for more than 160 years from its office in downtown Liberty. The Tribune published its first edition in 1846.

The 11,000-circulation weekly in the Clay County seat serves Liberty and the surrounding area with local community, education, government and sports news. The newspaper has a rich tradition of providing information and commentary on current events. Its Opinion Page proclaims: “Willing to praise but not afraid to blame.

Sun News is a group of highly regarded community newspapers published in the Northland of Kansas City, including Liberty Tribune, Sun Tribune, Sun Gazette, The Kearney Courier and The Smithville Herald. All of these publications are intensely community-focused in their content. The goal of Sun News is to be the primary source of local news within the individual communities its publications serve.

In addition to weekly community newspapers, Sun News also produces various specialty publications throughout the year. These include The Real Estate Weekly, a weekly Auto Showcase, an annual guide to Life in the Northland, a monthly women’s lifestyle magazine called Sunny and several themed special sections each season.

Sun News’ newspapers have won more than 100 Missouri Press Association awards in the past two years as well as more than a dozen national awards from Suburban Newspapers of America. Liberty Tribune won MPA’s Gold Cup for weekly newspapers in 2006.

Sun News is a division of NPG Newspapers Inc., a family-owned company based in St. Joseph, Mo. NPG Newspapers publishes 18 weekly community newspapers in the Kansas City area with combined circulations of more than 220,000, as well as numerous specialty publications.
