Michael Blevins has been directing since the age of 16.

onionsyrup_02cHis most recent work, “Onion Syrup,” follows the journey of three men starting a band in order to fill in the missing pieces of their lives. The movie was filmed last week on Liberty Square.

“I wanted to do a movie about music,” Blevins said. “I’ve always loved music, and I haven’t been able to put a lot of my songs into a film before.”

The musically talented cast played their own instruments for the film, onionsyrup_03cincluding Blevins.

In what he called an uncommon fashion, Blevins wrote the original rough draft for the film in one sitting.

“It was about a year and a half ago around Christmas. I had an idea about this group of musicians and sat down and wrote for 15 hours and cranked out a rough draft,” said the 2006 Liberty High School graduate.

Filming took place Thursday to Saturday, July 15 to 17, at the Square in the Corbin Theatre and former Ethan Allen building. The comedy is Blevin’s third production.

“There’s a progressive getting better in each film, and in this one we started investing in some heavy-duty, professional equipment,” Blevins said.

Some Hollywood sparkle also made an impact on the project. Joe Estevez, the younger brother of Martin Sheen, flew out from California for a role in the production.

Through a series of connections, Blevins was put in contact with the actor. In March, Blevins flew out to California to meet Estevez and discuss the project.

“It was kinda nerve wracking,” Blevins said. “Joe is the nicest guy ever. He read it, loved it and asked if he could be this certain part. I said, ’Absolutely.’”

For the veteran actor, choosing to become involved was an easy decision.

“I’m surprised and flattered they know who I am,” Estevez said. “I liked the script and liked working with the kids. It’s a fun little character.”

Estevez also enjoyed the opportunity to film in Liberty.

“I really enjoyed the location. I think Liberty is marvelous,” he said.

With the film, Blevins was able to combine his interests of music and directing as he keeps his focus set on improving his work.

“I’m trying my best to get what I want done,” said Blevins. “I don’t see myself stopping till I get to the top, but I think that’s the attitude you need.”
