Liberty police have in custody two suspects accused of stealing a donation canister from Culver’s restaurant in Liberty meant for Haitian earthquake victims.

Northland residents Scott D. Case, 25, and Jessica McGannon, 23, were picked up by the North Kansas City Police Department. A store surveillance video captured a man and woman stealing one of three canisters designated for the American Red Cross.

Paul Clause, co-owner and operator of the local Culver’s, said the restaurants had been putting out donation canisters for years for various causes such as Hurricane Katrina, the Haitian earthquake and Southeast Asia tsunami but this was the first time one had been stolen.

“It was a crime of opportunity,” Clause said. “But it’s so shocking, so horrible that they would steal from people in such desperate need.”

Clause said the couple purchased food and set the bags down on each side of the canister, then scooped it up and left. He said the canisters typically had $50 to $100 in them.
