Philadelphia. Boston. Liberty.

Mayor Greg Canuteson will kick off this year’s Fourth of July celebration for the first time with the reading of the Declaration of Independence on the Liberty Square.

The reading is set near the corner of Kansas and Water streets at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 4, followed by refreshments.

“They do it on the East Coast, why not in Liberty?” Canuteson said about his idea to launch a new tradition.

“The Declaration of Independence is as relevant today as it was in 1776,” Canuteson said as he rode a train in Washington, D.C., Friday, June 26. “It’s an important tradition.”

He said next year, he hoped the city could put together a parade and add other patriotic elements to the celebration.

Liberty 4th Fest will kick off at 6 p.m. at Fountain Bluff Sports Complex with children’s activities, including inflatables and face painting and a performance by the Saucy Jack Band. The Liberty Summer Band will play patriotic music at 9 p.m., just before the fireworks show at dark. Band founder Carol Prather will conduct several selections.

At 8:45 p.m., the mayor will welcome the crowd and make some comments and the American Legion will present the American flag. Officials said visitors are welcome to bring a picnic but food will be also be available for purchase in the concession stands. There is no admission charge. Pets, personal fireworks and alcohol are prohibited. It’s also a good idea to bring chairs or blankets.

Meanwhile, Canuteson said he was looking for volunteers to help plan next year’s expanded celebration.

With a name like Liberty, Canuteson said the city should become known for hosting the Kansas City area’s signature event.
