Liberty High junior medals in two events
Keels placed third in the triple jump with a leap of 45 feet, 6 1/4 inches and seventh in the high jump at 6-4 at last weekend’s Kansas Relays at the University of Kansas. It’s a season where Keels might find it difficult to advance to sectionals, much less the state meet. But coach Dan Davies is seeing signs Keels is starting to make substantial progress. “Katro was great on Friday,” Davies said. “His triple jump is awfully good this time of year. “When it comes to getting to state, it’s going to come down to who has the best day. There will be a chance not to get out of the district meet. If we aren’t on the top of our game, it could happen.” The four-mile relay team of senior Tyler Stuber, junior Ben Garrison, sophomore Matt Armstrong and junior Hossam Hassan placed seventh in a time of 18 minutes, 56.29 seconds. Armstrong, senior Zach Baldwin, junior David Warnex and Hassan were 11th in the distance medley relay in 11:01.49. Senior Danny Cunningham, junior Marcus Lucas, junior Chris Henry and junior Antonio Bynes were 11th in the 400-meter relay in a time of 43.75. Cunningham, Henry, Bynes and Baldwin were 12th in the 800 relay in a time of 1:33.09. The 4-by-880-yard relay team of Hassan, Garrison, Warnex and Stuber placed 20th in 8:34.95. Stuber was 21st in the 1,600 (4:33.09) and Garrison was 25th in 4:34.49. “Participating in the Kansas Relays is a great chance to get an idea of what a two-day meet is like,” Davies said. “There’s extremely good competition and we had some good competition times. There’s a lot of wait time inbetween races and if you are not used to it, you start to feel like you should be doing something. It’s a mental thing. “The guys got a feel for what it’s like, so it gives us a chance to work on things that didn’t go like we hoped at the Relays.” The Blue Jays will compete at the Rockhurst Invitational beginning at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 28.
