Jewell’s baseball team leading HAAC
William Jewell’s top women’s doubles team is getting some national attention. Sophomore Nikki Chambers and freshman Tanya Ratana are currently ranked No. 23 in the nation in the latest International Tennis Association poll for the NAIA. The duo currently has a 7-4 record this season and qualified for the ITA Small College Championships by winning the ITA Central Regional last September. “Nikki and Tanya are starting to really play some good doubles,” said head coach Paul Worstell in a press release. “They have had some good wins this spring and I think they still have a lot of room to improve and climb higher in the rankings.” Both players are making waves in singles as well. Chambers is 8-3 this season in the No.1 singles spot and is ranked No. 35. Ratana is also 8-3 as Jewell’s No. 2 singles player. She is ranked No. 44. The Cardinals are scheduled to play host to Baker at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, April 14.
William Jewell’s current nine-game winning streak has the team at the top of the Heart of America Athletic Conference baseball standings. The Cardinals, 27-8 overall, are 14-5 in the HAAC, ahead of Lindenwood (17-7) in conference play. The two teams squared off in a doubleheader in Liberty on Wednesday, April 8. Jewell completed a four-game home-and-away sweep of Graceland on Friday and Saturday, April 3 and 4. The Cardinals beat the Yellowjackets 8-5 and 6-2 at home April 3, then got 7-4 and 7-5 victories in Lamoni, Iowa, on April 4. The Cardinals are hitting .342 as a team. Shortstop Jon Ubbenga leads the team with a .481 average. He also is the team leader in doubles (18), home runs (3), runs scored (32) and runs batted in (30). Second baseman Jon Farris has a .358 average as Jewell’s leadoff hitter. Luke Kalb (5.50 ERA) and Joe Malin (3.66 ERA) lead the team with five wins apiece. Jacob Kraft has five saves for the Cardinals. Jewell, which has a 15-2 record at home this season, will play at Baker in a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. Friday, April 10, and then will play host to the Wildcats in a doubleheader at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 11.
